Paging Joe Comartin…

Ex-Liberal official guilty of fraud not going to jail

MONTREAL — Benoit Corbeil, a former top federal Liberal party official, won’t be going to jail after all.

Corbeil who pleaded guilty to influence peddling and fraud charges had his 15 month jail sentence reduced to 12 months served in the community by the Quebec Court of Appeal in a ruling issued on Wednesday.

In upholding his appeal on the fraud charge, but upholding his conviction on the corruption charge, the court also absolved him of the order to repay $117,000 to the Liberal Party of Canada.

Did you really expect anything different?

Now, will we see opposition MPs call the Minister of Justice to the mat to explain how this judicial outcome could have occurred?

Explain Rahim Jaffer sentence, ministers told

Joe Comartin doesn’t believe Rahim Jaffer received favourable treatment for his driving conviction but he wants the federal and Ontario governments to tell Canadians that.

Mr. Comartin, the NDP justice critic and former long-time trial lawyer, believes there is a risk that the Jaffer case will shake the integrity of the judicial system.

It seems that we need tougher sentencing guidelines for committing fraud while Liberal. The Crown could not proceed on the heftier charges in the Jaffer case because he was not searched in compliance with his Charter rights. However, Corbeil was convicted.

The Jaffer case does appear to many as a case where those in power got a break. Jaffer may have caught a break in this case, but not because he was “important”. His break was the result of the police failing to do their job correctly.

Our charter rights are important and they must be upheld. That happened in this case.

At least the liberal party wont get that money back. Better get those VF supporters to increase their donations.

Nah! The Liberals won’t and neither will the media. Like Michael Bryant, the reports on this (primarily by the TV news broadcasters) will file summary reports: here’s the background; here’s the verdict. And then onto other stories.

No claims of a slap on the wrist. No accusations of favouritism and preferential treatment. And most importantly, no reporters chasing down Liberals to ask why they aren’t showing consistency by asking why one of their own shouldn’t be held to the same standard.

Once again my jaw hits the floor by MSM hypocrisy — denying they have a Liberal bias while, ironically, putting it on full display for all to see on a daily basis.

Does anyone still expect our Canadian media to hold Liberals accountable?

I gave up that illusion of equal treatment a very long time ago. Too many journos have been cheering for the Liberals for too long.

The Democrats and the Bloc have to be careful and not stir up too much noise regarding the Ad scam Liberals as they may be in partners in a new deal to share power.

    On December 1, 2008
Dippers and the Bloc cleansed Liberals of Adscam,
by signing on to the Coalition of Losers.

We need to hear for Jo-Co on this one but who’s gonna ask him?

Jo-Co and company are part of the Coalition of losers , they can’t be antagonizing each other with such mundane stuff, they’ve got bigger fish to fry.

I can sympathize with your outrage with Corbeil. Tell y’all what, when Mulroney finally gets put away, I’ll help you get Corbeil incarcerated.(btw, Bryant was innocent. That’s why he got off, kids.)
