Solidarity For Their Own Good: A history of the Canadian Federation of Students

This past week, the Graduate Student’s Association at the University of Calgary overwhelmingly voted to leave the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS). The CFS has faced much opposition from students on a number of campuses on which the organization represents and many universities are moving to decertify themselves from the organization.

An extensive document dropped in my inbox this afternoon detailing troubles with the CFS and goes into great depth on the topic. I’ll quote from the executive summary:

Although the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) has been the subject of a great deal of criticism in recent years, few have sought to gain a detailed understanding of the organization and understand how it functions in practice. At present, many students are attempting to leave the organization, but most of these attempts have been blocked through various legal maneuverings. This paper is partly an organizational analysis of the CFS, partly a political argument, and partly an exposé.

Drawing largely on a large number of primary and secondary source documents, this paper argues that the CFS is governed, de facto, as an oligarchy consisting of a relatively small group of staff and directors. Due to a number of structural factors, the proper relationships of accountability between staff and directors, and between the CFS and its member students’ unions, are partially inverted, turning the organization into a top-down structure whose corporate culture is essentially bureaucratically-oriented, rather than membership-oriented. As a result of this bureaucratic orientation, the CFS’s interest in maintaining and increasing its membership (and source of funds) eclipses its commitment to respecting democratic decision-making, local autonomy, and freedom of the speech and of the press.

The paper was written by Titus Gregory and I’m only starting to go through it in any detail. I’ve reproduced it below. Please feel free to use the comments section below to discuss/debate the ideas presented.

    Well, the Globe's front page trumpets the economy in overdrive, surges in jobs, etc. Man, it's such a shame that PM Harper is ruining Canada's economy, isn't it? Meanwhile, McGuinty is taking a drubbing over his withdrawal of promised TTC funding. Tsk tsk. Those pesky Liberals. And, Ignatieff, of all people is saying that there is a divide between the political class and Canadians. It's a great news day. Oh, and the housing market is doing quite nicely, thank you very much. I wonder what the Halton dude thinks of that.

    Way to go, U of C Graduate Students!

    Student Federations are quick to decry the right-of-center positions and ban groups that they find “offensive” (like Carleton U's decision on a Pro-Life and Christian groups). Apparently the U of Ottawa Student Fed. took 7 1/2 hours to denounce American conservative author and speaker Ann Coulter by the following resolutions:

    “Whereas Ann Coulter is a hateful woman;

    “Whereas she has made hateful comments against GLBTQ, Muslims, Jews and women;

    “Whereas she violates an unwritten code of 'positive-space';

    “Be it resolved that the SFUO express its disapproval of having Ann Coulter speak at the University of Ottawa.”

    …and this is somehow “progressive”. This is somehow NOT being hateful towards Ms. Coulter. We are all entitled to our opinions on Ms. Coulter's statements. However, it seems rather fascistic of the Student Federation, which, (allegedly) represents ALL students of ALL backgrounds to “disapprove” of a woman who was supposed to discuss free speech (of all things) on the campus that fateful night.

    Appears Ann Coulter has a lot of ammunition to litigate against more than a few who are displaying the same hatred and intolerance they're accusing her of.

    Alas, there appears to be no capacity for reasoned thought in the minds of Socialists and budding Fascists, they condemned Coulter before she uttered a word at the University of Ottawa. This is the doctrine we fought against now rearing it's ugly head in our halls of higher learning. It's not something to be proud of, we need to be very concerned, this episode is our heads-up.

    Thanks to Ann Coulter for visiting whose visit has awakened this nation to the insidious Lefty creep that's been crawling along since Trudeau.

    Ann Coulter was invited by the Conservative students to speak at their function or whatever they had for her; the conservative students were not allowed by others members to display Ann Coulters photo on campus to let other conservatives of her intentions. the other members also said that if the conservatives wanted to invite her they have to hold their function elsewhere.

    Liz, We have that problem with the media.

    And in other news that the MSM tries to bury well off of the front page;

    With two months left to report for the 2009-10 fiscal year, the federal government has a budget deficit of $39.6 billion, whereas Finance forecast a $53.8-billion shortfall for the entire fiscal year. Should the momentum continue, it is possible the federal deficit for this fiscal year could be quite a bit smaller than projected.
