The NDP’s Nathan Cullen on “orientals” and the RCMP

Nathan Cullen, in this interview with “Batman”, is asked a few questions,

(1:40)

Batman: “If you take an oriental person, spin ‘em around a few times, does he become disoriented?”
Cullen: “I should think… only if you stood them on their heads”

(3:56)

Batman: “Why are Trix only for kids?”
Cullen: “They shouldn’t be anymore. You pass a bill like that? You think there’s a law you could write up for me that says Trix are not for kids anymore?”
Batman: “The RCMP is in enough trouble as it is. That guy, Arar?”
Cullen: “Arar? They played tricks on him?”
Batman: “Yeah, exactly!”
Cullen: “They sure did, they sent him to Syria. Is that very nice?”
Batman: “No, we should give him a bowl of Trix to make up for it”
Cullen: [laughter]

Somewhere, former Conservative MP Randy White sympathizes with another BC Member of Parliament caught by an amateur filmmaker, but doubts that a similar critical standard will be applied.

Nice try at turning the page but we still have parliament prorogued and on the front burner. We also have Iggy's day care policy announcement.

And John Bird's sexuality should be of interest to the Christian right wingers in the reform party. I think it would be great if he openly admitted or denied the story so he can go about his business as usual.

  • tedbetts

You'll have to walk us through this one, Stephen.

On the one hand, you have an MPP on film making bad jokes.

On the other hand, you have an MP saying the government should use the notwithstanding clause to override the Constitution to bar gay couples from marrying because gays are an abomination, and to use the notwithstanding clause to implement conservative viewpoints.

It's not so much the apples and oranges of content that is being compared here, it's the regrettable things said on amateur video that is the point for comparison here.

One guy's name was Randy, the other Nathan. I wouldn't obsess over that difference though.

Let's talk about why Nathan Cullen believes that the RCMP deported Arar to Syria to be tortured and why he thinks a bowl of chocolate cereal will make up for his ordeal.

    It's ok if you're NDP I suppose.

  • roughandtumble

ted, you probably need a more open blog site to discuss that stuff. They can't understand that type of open conversation here.

  • http://www.stephentaylor.ca Stephen Taylor

There's a point when you say “sorry, interview's over” like say when the interviewer says something racist.

  • tedbetts

I see your point, if the comments were being made by Cullen.

Far be it for me to defend a Dipper, but what does Cullen actually say? That the RCMP played tricks on Arar and weren't too nice to him. Is that even untrue?

By contrast, you had a specific policy point being made by an MP that came out during an election in which his party was saying they wouldn't do anything like that.

Maybe it's like you said, apples and oranges. Seems to me it's more like apples and potatoes.

  • http://www.stephentaylor.ca Stephen Taylor

Ah yes, I remember Trix now. Part of a balanced breakfast, I'm sure.

The shocking part here is that the RCMP did not deport Arar to Syria and Cullen believes this to be true.

  • http://www.stephentaylor.ca Stephen Taylor

Cullen says that the RCMP deported Cullen to Syria. This is factually inaccurate. I hope that he doesn't vote on policy/motions and operate in committees under this assumption.

  • tedbetts

Well if you want to make that the issue now, fine. Strange roundabout way to do it.

And if we require full complete understanding of verifiable facts to be a criteria for committee membership, then the Prime Minister is going to run out of MPs who can sit pretty fast, especially on the Justice Committee.

    Stephen, Here's what other bloggers are saying;

    Tuesday, February 2, 2010
A swing and a miss for Stephen Taylor
Once again, careless Aerosmith fans are struggling to understand the latest content emanating from Stephen Taylor’s primordial blog.

Featured is a Dion-quality video of New Democrat MP Nathan Cullen being interviewed by what appears to be a less rugged Adam West from the original Batman series.

On the basis of four and a half minutes (blessedly edited) of childish questions, Taylor has seen fit to declare Cullen politically wounded – so much so that he compares the affible MP to right-wing footnote Randy White’s unfortunate running of the mouth circa 2004.

Now let’s take a step back and evaluate shall we?

Cullen answers off-color questions from some buffoon in a plastic suit with appropriate awkwardness.

Randy White was taped as part of a documentary saying he favored governments and legislators using the notwithstanding clause to overturn court cases he disagreed with … including extending rights to gays and lesbians.

Not only is the equivalence lost, it's afraid to ask for directions.

But keep up the … um, work, Mr Taylor.

Hmm… Would you concede that the RCMP was complicit in Mr Arar's being sent to Syria by the US, in that they provided questionable intelligence?

    (O'Connor inquiry http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTV…)

Personally, I wouldn't hold ANYONE accountable for what they said to someone in a Batman suit, or holding a “22 Minutes” mic, etc. Just a rule I have…

Good for him in playing along. It’s not like he had the guy handcuffed, like Harper has done to such interviewers.

It's hard not to notice that there are no Conservatives on this thread being irrational ranters, finger pointers or conspiracy theorists.

I read this as soon as it was posted and recognised immediately the point Stephen was making and the double standard it was suggesting but chose not to comment. As Conservatives, we are faced with the contradictions that many defend here.
You seem to have missed the point entirely. Sad.

Hmm. I’m not sure which video you were watching but it seemed to me like it was Batman who suggested giving Arar a bowl of cereal. Not chocolatey cereal, but Trix. They’re fruity.

Perhaps you need something shinier, Stephen. This isn’t much of a distraction.

let me respond to some of the errors in the response.

    1. Nathan Cullen is an MP, not an MPP.
    2. Trix, although made by nestle, is not a chocolate cereal – it’s a fruity part of a complete breakfast.

I hardly see a connection. Cullen didn't even utter the word 'oriental.' And the second quote?? What's the big deal?

  • http://www.stephentaylor.ca Stephen Taylor

You don't validate a racist question by answering it and by using “them” when the subject is “orientals”.

And the second? The RCMP didn't deport Arar to Syria.

MSM is too busy enjoying the Coalition on the Hill attacking the Conservatives to be bothered to pick up on this story. that it gets national press coverage. Otherwise they really couldn't be bothered. Maybe Toronto's NDP mayor will ask Cullen to apologize.

Oops! Sorry Stephen… didn't include one of the hyperlinks. Here's the correct….

You know, I still can't stop thinking about the LPC being granted another 2 years to pay off the debt to Elections Canada. When Chretien was in power, the LPC ran year after year of surprise (albeit false) surpluses and was lauded for it. When I think about it, those surpluses did not affect my own life one iota. Now, the LPC is screeching about the alleged deficit that PM Harper is running. However, the LPC itself is in a deficit position and has been granted a 2-year extension to get itself out of its deficit. So, if the LPC has an extension, perhaps Ignatieff and his sheep should drop the rhetoric about our alleged deficit until the LPC can get itself into a surplus position. Furthermore, how can any intelligent Canadian vote Liberal if the party cannot even manage its own finances, let alone the finances of the country. Well, we all know that the definition of hypocrisy is LPC so it's not surprising, is it? I also read yet another story yesterday in which Ignatieff once again “warned” the PM about something. Is it any wonder that our PM ignores the paper tiger undemocratically appointed American leader of the LPC?

As opposed to implementing liberal viewpoints through the Constitution? Sometime is wrong with this picture.

There’s nothing racist about the word oriental. Oriental means pertaining to the East and Occidental means pertaining to the West. It’s simply a matter of knowing the English language.

Is Occidental a racist term? Of course not… you occidental you!

east of eden, you make about as much sense as the ten percenters I get from tory MP's thst go straight to my file 13.

The debt by former leadership candidates cannot be paid for by the party and they are trying to raise the money w/o hurting the party's finances. I see that as being very responsible as opposed to a $60BB deficit by the turkeys you love to support.

  • kenn2

I didn't see racism, I saw a question containing a word pun, and an awkward response. But I'm not of Asian descent, so I will defer to the judgment of those who are.

Regarding the second… I doubt that that recording will ever be relied upon as the definitive answer as to who Cullen thinks deported Arar (except here, of course).

If your point is that there wasn't even a momentary pile-on from the media… well, ok maybe… but I think most people can discern why the Randy White interview mattered, and this one doesn't.

Most puzzling is why you'd even bring this up. It seems the best that the right can come up with is a series of “they did it too” attacks against the opposition, which is hardly flattering to the CPC. Harper would be alot more formidible, and much more popular right now, if he simply did what he said he'd do, instead of out-Liberaling the Liberals.
