Rob Ford set to run for Toronto mayor

Yesterday I heard this Toronto municipal news tidbit from a source close to Rob Ford’s camp who says that the conservative city councilor is “definitely in” for a shot at taking over the mayor’s office, a post to be vacated by David Miller in the next year. Today, I called Ford himself and confirmed that he had a couple of items to address with his business before he gets going on the campaign and that he plans to announce in March.

Those close to Ford say that he is building an organization and gathering the money needed to make a top tier shot at Toronto’s top job.

Ford won the #2 Etobicoke North ward with 66% of the vote during the last municipal election. Ford supporters that are concerned that the popular candidate is vacating a conservative seat on council may be relieved to hear that Ford’s brother plans on running in his place.

UPDATE: Ford is now denying the story. I should say that I spoke to him on his cell phone (last four digits: 2146) because I wanted to confirm it with the man himself. I had heard the rumour yesterday and sought to exercise due diligence by confirming it with Ford before running with the story. I told Ford exactly who I was and that I generally cover federal politics but was chasing down a municipal rumour. He told me in no uncertain terms that he’s looking to wrap up a few outstanding issues with his business (with clients in New Jersey, no less) and is looking to make the announcement in March. Excited by the scoop I thanked him and even told him that he’d probably be getting a few calls after I posted the story.

  • I like Rob Ford, but he would be a poor representative for Toronto as Mayor.

Bafoonery at its best! Doug called that one. So he says it. Then he denies it. He is not even in the race yet. I am going to start a pool on how long it takes this clown to self destruct. He might as well just hand over his "funds" to Smitherman directly like the rest of the spineless, socialist bunch of torys that are working for him. Have fun in the next provincial election. Guess you can't really say much about EHealth now can you?

Good news! Where do I sign up to help him?

Fantastic, he can't win, he draws votes off to the right and he opens up his seat for a progressive. Sweet.

Ford's a good guy. I hear him sometimes on the John Oakley Show, Thursday mornings on AM640 Toronto. Unfortunately for Ford, the left wing Toronto media will bury him. Oops! I'm being redundant, ain't I? Toronto media pretty much covers it.

Their hypocrisy will be on display for all to see when they pull out all the stuff from Ford's past -- alleged controversies, stated positions, comments and the like. With Smitherman? Well, he's just good ol' George, a newly minted politcian with no baggage. Every time I hear Smitherman's name referenced in reports dealing with the mayor race, no where does the mdia mention eHealth anymore... no mention of C. defficle (something that killed far more Ontarians than SARS ever did), Smitherman joking about CUPE reports of abuse in nursing homes by saying that he would consider wearing an adult diaper into the legislature. Oh yeah, and no mention that he was a drug addict as a sitting MP.

I wish Rob well but I think he should reconsider. He's needed at city hall and if he runs for mayor he has to give up his concil seat.

But from a perspective of analyzing media bias, it should be fun.
  • What about running federally for the CPC to push out some of the 416 deadwood?

Didn't he get arrested for some domestic dispute a year or so ago?
  • Can you link the story and the current status?

i got a chance to meet the ford's a few years ago , when i did some lawn maintenance at there cottage one summer , they seemed like a nice bunch of people and i wish them the best of luck in the toronto municipal elections .
  • If Councillor Ford is "gathering the money" before he becomes an official Declared Mayoral Candidate, he is borrowing a page from Former Toronto Mayor Barbara Hall who "reserved" campaign donations prior to entering the race.

    Oops.

Great news! He won't get >10% of the vote. Also opens up his ward seat to others.
