Liberals in support of new citizenship guide

The new guide released this week for newcomers to Canada has been generally well accepted by the mainstream of Canada. Of course, some on the left are criticizing the guide for focusing on Canada’s “militaristic” history and for not mincing words when it comes to “barbaric cultural practices” not in line with Canadian values.

Liberals are finding it difficult to oppose the guide as some of their heavy hitters are already backing up the government.

Marc Chalifoux was Michael Ignatieff’s former political assistant and he is quoted in the government’s press release (along with Margaret McMillan, Rudyard Griffiths and Jack Granatstein):

“Discover Canada should be in the hands of not only new Canadians, but every high school student in Canada,” said Marc Chalifoux, Executive Vice-President of the Historica-Dominion Institute. “All citizens, whether they were born in Canada or not, need to understand how the institutions of this country came to be. This guide tells them how.”

Former Paul Martin Director of Communications Scott Reid had this to say on CBC’s Power & Politics:

I think that the citizenship quiz actually is a good initiative. I like the updating. Vimy Ridge, Louis Riel, these are references that ought to be part and parcel of it. You know, when you take a look at the people that guided its reshaping: Canadians of unquestioned qualification.

Former Liberal Party President Stephen Ledrew also gave the guide thumbs up on his CP24 show yesterday.

Watched the video of Reid and pal and also the commercial for the CBC and its new plan and name. Could we not accuse the cbc of using taxpayer money to promote themselves.
Discover Canada should be must reading for everyone to get out of highschool.

The fellow who works gratis for the Liberal party, Warren Kinsella , pointed out there's no mention of the fact we have same -sex marriage in Canada. Guess we know where the minds of the great thinkers of the Liberal party are, fully in desperation mode, grasping at straws that won't suck or blow.

  • NovaDog

I liked it when Tim Powers replied, there is no mention of traditional marriage.

  • Liz J

Yeah, that was a zinger from Tim.

  • Switchyard O'Taylor

and no discussion of the children's staple “La Guerre Des Toques”?

    I smell a unity crisis.

  • greg61

Also no mention of the fact that the Leafs haven't won a Stanley Cup since I was in Kindergarden in 1967. Have they no sense of important history?

  • hollinm

Its hard to believe that the Liberal party actually supports anything proposed by this Conservative government. Will wonders ever cease? I expected Iffy to hold a press conference and denounce the new booklet saying it doesn't represent Liberal values.

  • hollinm

Frankly I think Power and Politics is a waste of time and have stopped watching it.

By the way if anyone is watching Fox these days our taxpayer money is being used by the CBC to advertise their news program etc. I guess they know a lot of Canadians are no longer watching Canadian news.

I just read the whole thing (and thanx for posting it). I loved it. It’s so…normal! It’s like it was written by a regular Canadian person, someone like me or one of my friends or family or colleagues. Not somebody with a partisan or religious or regional axe to grind.

Where in Ottawa did they find such a person?

  • real conservative

What! We are citizens again? I thought we had merely become residents as per the globalists?

  • jmwebb

Wonder what Donolo will spin about Ignatieff's claim that the”Liberals” are responsible for Canada's founding values __NOT! I guess it takes a past politician rather than a present one to excercise some diplomacy.

  • rickhodgson

we should'nt have to change our beliefs and customs because imigrants believe in our customs, merry christmas,oh canada, remembrance day, these are three things that made canada these are three things that made and make canadians die for our country. make people that want to move to canada conform to canadas beliefs not theirs, most people that move here , are moving here because it is better than where they are coming from, then they try changing our ways to their old ways. wrong

  • Liz J

    Another grave omission!

We haven't heard directly from the Count's mouth, his new brain behind the throne kicks in on Monday, expect he'll be cobbling up some errors and omissions in the guide. After all, only Liberals have Canadian values, it was they who built Canada, Iggy said so. Sir John A, R.I.P.

  • Liz J

That claim by Iggy would only get past those who know not our history.

Toronto being the Liberal stronghold in Ontario, wonder what he expects to gain by clearing his office of Torontonians? That, coupled with offending his little Quebec Lieutenant, Denis Coderre could be just the strategy to send him back to Harvard.

  • batb

    How do I get one?

  • Davey

Didn’t mention monogamous marriage either. Whoops, probably too late

  • TwoYen

The CBC made a mistake when they expanded their politics show to two hours. There simply is not enough material to fill this amount of time.

    CTRL+P ;)

  • hollinm

Absolutely right. The second half is some of the first half as well. However, the political panel is boring (Kathleen Petty?) and Solomon is not that great a host. He looks like he is going through the motions. It won't be long before it is cut back to 30 minutes. Would be interesting to see the ratings.

  • jmwebb

Yes, Liz, I wondered the same thing. Perhaps a bit off topic, but Iggy/Donolo is axeing the very core of support that lured him back to Canada (i.e. Davey, et al). IMHO, Coderre is just waiting in the wings for the Libs to turf Iggy– Coderre sees himself as the next Liberal P.M. from Quebec after Donolo cleans house. Wonder how all this is impacting the morale of the Lib party?

  • batb

Oh darn, Stephen! You know how I feel about techie stuff. ;-)

I like holding reports, newspapers, and books in my own two hands and paging through them …

  • Liz J

Agree, batb, nothing beats a book in hand!

I rarely watch regular news because of the errors and tabloid style adopted years ago. It is easier or safer to ignore most of the MSM who prefer to scare, shock, sensationalize to get ratings. A quick search on the internet can provide information from various sources.

  • AtlanticJim

Gotta agree with turtle. Probably the MOST normal document to come out of Ottawa since 1834.

Would have thought that Granatstein would be laying low after that atrocious appearance alongside Mansbridge at the national Rememberance Day service.

  • Liz J

Missed Granatstein's appearance with Mansbridge at the national Remembrance Day service, nothing would surprise me, but, how bad was it AtlanticJim?

  • AtlanticJim

This doctor of history thought that people “win” the Victoria Cross and was not even in the ball park as to how many Canadians have actually been awarded the VC.

That was when they were not spending most of their time acting as fashion consultants on the fact that the GG wore her Army uniform. He even refered to it as the CF uniform. He had no idea about what regiments and units were represented and even felt compelled to point out that the kids in the Sea Cadet uniforms were not actually in the Navy.

It was atrocious from the word go. Judging from the dead air, I think they both went for a Timmies run when the service started.

There simply is not enough material to fill this amount of time. OF course there is enough material to fill the extra hour with Conservative reporters this time

the politocs you hear on CBC is liberal minded. The next hour should be Conservatives.
The americans have liberal(democrat) media reporting and politic show hosted by liberals.
And they americans, have FOXNEWS a conservative station.

If the americans had 'ONLY' liberal media right across the USA. The president would be 'walking on water.
Canada 'only' has liberal national media right across this country. That's why the LPOC have been walking on water for decades without being harassed.

    Have you ever heard CBC politic host ask the liberals for the missing $40million dollars;
the liberals $54B EI scandal ; etc etc…….? No!

The LPOC know very well that the media is for them, stand by them and will defend them to the end.

  • Liz J

Appears they didn't know and didn't know enough to do their homework in preparation for the show.
Add to that Petey has been given the Order of Canada. Mr Granatstein, I thought, was the guru on the subject of the Canadian military history. For shame.
