Customized direct mail is an advanced technique but I've seen it used several times in my riding. When they know your mailing address, they can assume a LOT of things. With your IP address, they can try to assume other things too.

I have to admit, this is the best piece of online political advertising I've ever seen. Clear, succinct, slightly customized and generally pleasant.

In answer to the burning question…

A friend forwarded “Mike” to his friend with a very unusual name. Alas, Mike says, “Hello there.”, instead of “Hello there, Paul”. But he still says, “Nice to see you again.” (In my case, this is true, as Mike was kind enough to pose for a photograph with me back in 2006.)
