Second interview with Tim Hudak

Tim Hudak is running to become leader of the Ontario PC Party. I had the opportunity to sit down (in Ottawa) and chat with Tim (at Queen’s Park) and talk about policy and politics.

In this interview I ask about the Harris endorsement, the membership snafu, Tim’s position on the HRCs and the LCBO and how he’ll continue building the party should he become the leader of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party.

I wasn't sure who I would support but then I heard Elliot's position on Human Rights Commissions and now I support anyone but her.

Have to say this is a toughie. We have so much to consider in selecting a leader this time around. On the face of it, one would think anyone could boot out McGuinty but we can't take that chance.

I certainly can't support the HRC stance taken by Elliot either. She'll have to revisit that one before I can consider her.

Just wanna tell you that the job you're doing is great. I come back to this blog from time to time even if I am not a conservative partisan in any way. It's good to hear what the Progressive conservative candidates have to say. About Hudak, he will probably win the race, but I have doubts about his charism (which is unfortunately very important to lead a political party to victory. But two thing's are sure: Hudak will stand on the conservative side of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party – which is why Harris supports him – and McGuinty have a big disadvantage: he have to deal with a major recession.

  • Bring Back Harris

Both Stephen Taylor and Tim Hudak did a great job in this interview. The Mike Harris endorsement was huge for Mr. Hudak. People forget that half of Toronto and the entire GTA went blue under Mike Harris. At the time, job quotas and welfare reform were 10 times as “toxic” as the human rights bureaucracy is now. But Mike Harris had the courage to stand up to the Liberals and the Toronto Star to enact REAL reform, similar to what Tim Hudak is proposing with the OHRC. The tribunal is a McGuinty-created sham; it has to go. (Are there any PC Party voters who believe it is a human right to smoke marijuana on the premises of a family restaurant?) I see a lot of Mike Harris's leadership qualities in Tim, and I think the voters will too.

I completely agree with Tim's position on the LCBO. It is the red-tape put up by the Liberals does nothing but hurt small business owners, and opening up competition will help local wineries and contribute to Ontario's economy in the long term.

  • Liz J

We have to be careful though of getting bogged down on one issue. Perhaps in Elliot's case her stance on other issues will outweigh that of her stance on HRC. Choosing a leader over one issue can be a losing proposition. Hopefully she'll leave that an open rather than closed issue.

yeah that's the obvious reason to support, just don't support those that are there because of the majority not the work! That's the way I go about it.

stephen, nice of you to change the channel to provincial politics just when some juicy federal polls come out.

Nanos out yesterday…Libs… 37.2% cons….31.8% poll taken june 1 and 2 with attack ads running

Looks like you can ditch your security blanket, it's a sure thing, a slam dunk for the Ignatieff Libranos according to some pollster. There's one little sticker, the Bloc are in no way going to endorse an election now when they're down in the polls. Pensions are on the line for too many of them from the gouvernement du Canada. As far as my math takes me, Liberals can't take down the government without Bloc support. The NDPees are not happy with their coalition cop-outs either.

Remember too how fickle the Quebec electorate can be. They may not choose the Conservatives but they do love to have their blackmailers in the HOC to keep that separation threat alive. Duceppes will give them all they need to know about Iggy and then some.

    Enjoy.
