Hudak and Elliott campaigns protest party decision on London debate

I received news this evening that the PC Party had moved to prohibit recording devices from a leaders debate to occur today in London. I’ve verified with a reporter covering the race that this indeed was the case. The Elliott and Hudak campaigns were quick to protest the decision. Here are their emails (forwarded to me by the respective campaigns).

The Elliott campaign,

and the Hudak campaign,

Finally, I’ve heard that the party will go ahead and allow reporters to use recording devices during the debate.

UPDATE: This is confirmed. Here is the media advisory from the party.

Not to mention that recordings allow for the verification of whether or not quotes are accurate.

And forget the media — a uniform ban on recording devices would probably have included the campaigns, who would understandably want to get an unfiltered message out to PCPO members.

Reporters only will be allowed to use recording devices or anyone in general?

You know what? Given the media's propensity to take anything Conservative out of context and edit in a manner to make our party look bad, I am all for banning recording devices for the media. Our own party, however, should record the debate for accuracy and research. But, until the MSM smartens up, the debate and such proceedings should either be live or closed to the media. The media has done it to itself with its machinations and desire to be the “expert” and to do the “thinking” for the public. I would prefer live news conferences and live debates – this way, we Canadians will see and hear the real thing without the media running interference.

    Hello Steven,

Two questions: 1) would you happen to know who might be airing the debate? 2) will blogging tories be recording the debate and (hopefully) posting some videos for those of us who can't be there?

If the Ontario Tories were smart they would livestream the whole debate on their website or youtube channel.

    best,

    Andrew.

The PCs know that the Ontario Liberal Party will air clips of the candidates fighting during the debates. The party wants the PCs to be able to speak their minds among themselves without having to answer to criticism of moderates shocked at the extreme right wing views sure to be expressed.

I agree with Andrew. Given the technology available to us to be able to reach more people, why wouldn't the party want to livecast the debate?

    What is this? 1968?

If we are confident in what we're saying and in our leadership we need to prove it by being open to all…including media.

By even suggesting this to media, it's starting off on the wrong foot.
