Chuck Reese. Your thinking is neanderthal. Harper was right to call this election. Parliament was disfunctional. Liberal stacked "senate" held up bills presented by the CPC for months. Perhaps you may be able to tell us poor taxpayers why the 250 million taxpayers dollars cost us in the Liberal Adscam scandal??? . There is 41 million still unfound that even the auditor general could not find. In who's Swiss bank accounts are these 41 million stashed?. A breath of fresh air has decended over Canada with the muscular minority government the people of Canada gave Stephen Harper and the CPC. The only stumbling point that the CPC failed to get a majority was the "Bloc" in Quebec. A party that should be banned federally when no other candidates for this party have surfaced outside Quebec particularily when they advocate the breakup of Canada. The Liberal and NDP can only brag about being the Toronto party- they have only 2 seats from the BC border to Sudbvury. Viva Stephen Harper and the CPC. Let's see how the opposition will perform for the next few years without forcing another election because of their shabby tactics and lack of political funds, and clueless party policies, particularily the Liberals and Dion who still has outstanding accounts of more than $200,000 for his election as the head schoolmaster of the Liberal party. Will the Liberal party pay off this account???. Three cheers to the voters of Canada. They can see a "fraud" a mile away.

While I was no fan of Preston while in government he does have democratic principles which I wish he would pass on to PMSH who has no such delusions. Preston and another elder from the Libs should be tasked to educate people on their democratic rights and obligations to vote. we do need more politcial dialogue here and not attack ad style government.
I know this will not happen under Harper but election financing as rearranged by Chretien is still not done properly. I think all financing should be left to the parties and just have it well dccumented as to origin of the funds. Poiitical donations are tax deductible and many more people would donate as well as corporate sponsors that would make our main parties much more aware of their constituencies.
The left is not really in disarray but truly in need of someone who can motiivate the third and fourth parties to coalesce around them. Its time for the NDP to stop being Liberal pretenders and either join them or go back to their protest roots. While Jack Layton may have won more seats that last time out it was simply through the magic of vote splitting in most ridings.
The greens will ultimately loom as a right wing competitive to the currtent cons as their overall policy manual is very right wing at least economically speaking.
Duceppe is done as well as Dion as he can now go out as a winner and collect his large federal pension. That leaves Quebec wide open as Harper and the cons, except for a brief Mulroney honeymoon have never understood Quebec. The Libs ,if they are smart, will pick a Quebec friendly leader and force their policies more clearly to the center.

I believe that the cons will dump Harper in due time and sooner than later but well before the next election once a new lib leader is in place. They will not want the libs to get head start on them.
Harper has had 3 kicks at the can and could not deliver a majority. His party has a fragile lead in Ontario seats and they have no talnet on the front benches which indicates furute problems. his backfire in queebc has other implicatons that could make national unity an issue again. Charest conveniently became a Quebec nationalist in order to ward off Harper's advances and like the last tory endeavour with Meech lake they continue to misunderstand that province.

I don't know how anyone can speak about this election that cost the Canadian taxpayer 350 million dollars. How many children would have gone to school with a full belly or new equipment for our soldiers? Mr. Harper and his ilk should be ashamed of themselves and the results.

I will now be adopting Mr. Williams attitude towards a party I had in the past supported.

This is applaling..................

Good interview Stephen...true we do need to get youth/young adults more involved in the political process.
Though this could prove a daunting point, it can be accomplished with time. In my opinion, the political left is in retreat..the trick is to keep them in that retreat. The very youth that the conservative movement needs to connect with are unfortunately being educated by the left leaning beureaucracy of indoctrinated teachers...though one should take heart in the knowlege that a good portion of these left leaning idealogues are reaching retirement and that should lessen the influence. This can only be an advantage though IF the conservative movement fills the void. Society's need of new direction can't hurt in that so called progressive thinking ...and its not so new ideologies are showing signs of wear around the edges. The prudent thing to do would be to encourage more exposure to a tried and proven agenda of conservative ideas/ideals by striving to get the message out as a reasonable and moderate alternative to social-liberalism as practiced today.
This is not going to happen overnight as the socialist movement has about forty years of entrenchment on its side.True as we conservatives wish change today,so did left-leaners of those yesterday years. I know I was one of them..
There are lessons to be learned by where we have been and I for one will say that all policy should not be discarded though a goodly am't should.
I think the change needs to start at the top AND at the grassroots level..both working towards the middle. This will take time and strategic planning with many setbacks along the way. However Canadians specifically are ready for that change and if the conservative movement can demonstrate confidence and integrity along with direction, then I can't see it failing.
Remember that the Left is on the run...its up to us to keep pushing for a more cohesive and sustainable alternative.
Mr Harper has won his mandate and as such has the go ahead of the Cdn. electorate. Some ground has been lost but interestingly some has been gained in the big urban areas(,though no seats.) This is not something to dismay as I previously stated that we are dealing with a nervous urban populous with a cradle to grave longing for social security and direction. This of course is the real underlying problem with the last movement and why it is doomed.
PMSH now needs to start weaning these reluctant people back to the fold of self sufficiency to a place where they can again be proud of their newfound freedom of mind. There will be much kicking and yelling along the way but they could look at as a form of rehab which it undoubtedly is.
