“Newfoundland and Labrador: 0″ …. That's what Danny Williams wanted with his ABC strategy, and that's what Newfoundlanders did to themselves … a big fat zero. May the freeze in the dark.

  • http://www.stephentaylor.ca Stephen Taylor

Well now that's not fair. Many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are painfully living under the fiefdom of Danny Williams. A good number are counting the days until he leaves office.

I don't think Mr. Williams has very much to be proud of.

  • East of Eden

Stephen – if NL voted no Conservatives into MP seats, that would indicate to me that most followed Danny like blind and mindless sheep. Danny did not want Harper and, with no MPs, he won't have to put up with Harper. I say that Harper should either fawn all over the NL citizens or turn his back. Enough is enough. I didn't see a great outcry from NLers when Danny Williams engaged in that totally disgraceful behaviour during the campaign so they deserve to be shut out. Quebec slags Canada and our government falls all over the province. The Libs slag Harper and he doesn't fight back.

Turning the other cheek is one thing but allowing somebody to stomp all over your head is quite another. I would like to see Williams publicly and realistically apologize profusely to Harper and to leave it up on his web page and put it in every paper that he ran his slag ads.

    Atlantian:
Whichever way one looks at it, if they don't elect a representative then… well…they won't be represented.
Its sad that Danny W is such a little man and though in politics,…sticking in the knife is considered part of the game/process, completing the thrust by twisting it is not.
The sad part is that some did not heed Danny's words and they are the true casualties…though one could take heart in knowing that in the end Danny will have to pay the price …as well he should.

Danny delivered a “Goose Egg” to Mr. Harper, and they got a Cabinet “Goose Egg” in return.

  • Fred

Danny is in a world of hurt. His juvenile ABC campaign was fueled by his belief in his economic prosperity with oil at $140. Now that oil is south of $70, Danny “The mouth that roared” Williams need help from Ottawa to keep the books solid, the hospitals open and his cronies happy.

Danny is going to need to go to Ottawa and ask Steve for some help.

Beg Danny beg, it becomes you.

  • East of Eden

You know, Simon, I never thought of it like that. The voters in that province obviously do not wish to have an effective rep in Ottawa. It was pretty obvious at the outset that the Libs would not win the election. What galls me is that Williams is PC – what could he be thinking? He made the same sort of noise against Martin, as well. Funny how he was not so vocal with Chr├ętien. I wonder why.

I have to laugh at the interpretations being given to some of these appointments by some all-knowing, all-seeing journalists. Their analyses usually begin with something like ” well, obviously Stephen Harper [usually sans the honourific 'Prime Minister'] is sending the message that … blah blah blah.” How wonderful to be able to read Mr. Harper's mind. And how presumptuous.

Some of the know-it-alls are saying Mr. Blackburn, Ms. Verner, Mr. Lunn, and Mr. O'Connor, and perhaps others, were demoted, and that Mr. Prentice may have been placed in Environment, a controversial no-win portfolio, to block him from actively seeking to eventually replace Mr. Harper.

Cripes, if people are STILL in cabinet, why is it necessarily a demotion?

I wish those same all-seeing sages would look into their crystal balls and tell me what numbers to play in Saturday's Loto 6/49. They'd perhaps be more accurate.

  • Nicola Timmerman

What happened to Diane Ablonczy? Why is she never given a full cabinet post?

    Poor Danny.

Williams has some kind of twisted sense of Newfie nationalism. He seems to think that if he cries and whines just like Quebec, he'll get the same treatment as Quebec. Problem is, no political party really gives a flying &%$# about his province's measly 7 seats.

He will whine, cry, and complain, and when he finally realizes it doesn't do anything if you're not Quebec or Ontario, he'll sit down and shut up.

Just watching MDL and Goodale has lost his mind. He's clearly out of control. NEVER have I heard such vitriol from anyone in Opposition. It's beyond all reason and beyond the pale. There has to be a point where someone in he media have to intervene with someone who is obviously off the rails.

I defy anyone to watch the show in rerun and report back with any other opinion on Goodale.

  • Beer and Popcorn

Liz – i agree – the release on the Liberal web site is also over the top. “Harper's Cabinet Choices leave Canada Vulnerable” is the headline – talking about what a terrible choice John Baird is, how incompetent Flarhety is and about how Jason Kenny supports “just” forms of discrimination. (huh?)

One one hand, the release scolds Harper for making changes to Cabinet, putting new people in areas of power that will leave Canada vulnerable, and then proceeds to scold him for “..keeping a tight rein on the entire conservative agenda”.

So which is it, are there too many new people in positions of power making decisions, or is it Harper making too many decisions?

Just more evidence of the level of desperation that is seeping into the Liberal ranks – grasping at anything, which resonates with no one. Even the Star picked it up as a good news story “GTA Gets Cabinet Presence”

  • Bruce from Cambridge

Overall a really good cabinet. I'm thrilled that my MP Gary Goodyear got an appointment. But its disappointing that Newfoundland has no representation. They have unique problems and issues that need a voice at the cabinet table. I hope Danny Williams is happy.

  • Jake

Danny Williams is nursing the bullet hole he shot in his own foot. At the recent inquiry into the Botched Blood Tests Scandal in his Health Department he couldn't seem to recall if he was ever told about it or not. But strangely, he can recall precisely everything Stephern Harper said to him over the last 2 or 3 years. Hmmm.

  • John

Apparently only 16% (those who voted CPC on e-day) of NFLDers wanted Williams gone.

  • Philip Hauser

So much for co-operation in the commons. Goodale is a jerk, McCallum's rant was similar Goodale is the guy who screwed up the income trust fiasco and cost his boss Paul Martin the precious majority and power.

Sad that the liberals with all their problems can't simply say we will work with the government.

  • Liz J

Beer and Popcorn, the reaction from the Liberals had to have been prepared in advance all packaged and ready to OPPOSE with no idea what they were opposing. Sad really. These are very angry people with nothing better to offer. They're dying for power for power's sake, can't bear the fact they have no chance of gaining power in the foreseeable future and they're in no position to runthemselves let alone the country.

Goodale and McCallum are not doing themselves or what's left of their party any good dishing out such hatred against a very decent slate of people, elected by the people of Canada. In their arrogance they are showing great disrespect for the people of Canada and our democracy.
How could any party sink to such depths?

  • MF

He wasn't vocal with Chretien because they weren't really in office at the same time.

Danny Williams took over as NFLD Premier on October 21, 2003. By then, Chretien has already announced his retirement.

Paul Martin became PM in December, 2003.

  • Bruce from Cambridge

It was really depressing to listen to Goodale's vicious personal attacks and extreme partisan rhetoric on Duffy Live. If he is continuing as Opposition House Leader this does not bode well for the upcoming session. What I cant understand is why the good people of Wascana keep re-electing this guy.

  • Philip Hauser

Good Cabinet all around some interesting choices and hopefully we can get down to running the country.

  • Aviator

I wonder if Danny Millions will convince one of his Liberal MPs to cross the floor so he gets a seat at the table. Now that would be shear poetry in floor-crossing motion.

  • Soccermom

I was hoping the PM would appoint Gerry Ritz as Minister responsible for Newfoundland.

  • Observant

Ghoulish Goodale and monster McCallum are horrendous in their blatant attacks on Harper and Conservatives .. they’re totally nutz and the CBC proudly parades these two. I suspect anybody who listens to these two old dog Liberals will be turned off from the Liberal party … and the next new leader would be wise to purge jerks like these out of the rebuilt Liberal party .. or maybe not.

My bad. I'm not all that great with dates. Thanks for the clarification. I guess it would explain why he wasn't vocal with Chretien. LOL.

What's with adding Rob Merrifield to cabinet. Not to knock the guy, but I just don't see a point to his position (unlike say, adding peter kent to cabinet just to have him there). He isn't a star nor does he fulfill any geographical, gender, ethnic quota…
