Oh Danny Boy!

“A majority government for Stephen Harper would be one of the most negative political events in Canadian history” — Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

These were Danny Williams words last week as reported by CTV.ca.

Stephane Dion is in BC today trying to sell that province on the benefits of yet another carbon tax. The folks in BC aren’t buying as their own provincial carbon tax has been very unpopular. Dion’s tour lands its carbon belching jet in BC while gas prices are higher than they’ve been in recent memory. While gas prices have risen due in part to Hurricane Ike ravaging the Texan coastline, British Columbians aren’t likely to give Dion a hero’s welcome.

So why is Danny Williams running an ABC (anyone but conservative campaign)? For Newfoundland and Labrador this would only amount to electing more Liberals.

Oil producing economies such as Saskatchewan and Alberta have already slammed Dion’s plan. Why would Danny Williams want to hurt his own province’s economic future? Despite the obvious masochism in Danny’s begging for taxation that will affect jobs in his resource sector, Stephane Dion’s carbon tax will have real-world effects for everyday Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

The “Caribou” ferry uses 41,000 litres of fuel (partially diesel, partially bunker) to travel one way between NS and NL. By working to help the Liberals form government, Danny would be advocating a 7 cent per litre tax be applied directly to Marine Atlantic crossings. How would he reconcile that? This ferry service is a vital link for residents of that province to access the rest of Canada. Stephen Harper’s recent announcement cutting the excise tax on diesel goes directly against Dion’s plan for increased taxation. Since Newfoundlanders and Labradorians import most of their food, Dion’s carbon tax will be felt quickly as most food arrives by diesel-fueled trucks and ferry.

The fishery is also an integral part of the economy in Newfoundland and Labrador. Fishers use diesel fuel and will also face a 7 cent per litre tax increase under Stephane Dion’s plan. How can Danny Williams say he is standing up for fishers when he supports Stephane Dion’s carbon tax?

Danny has received a lot of political mileage when it comes to facing off against the federal government. He did so under previous Liberal administrations. However, while Newfoundlanders and Labradorians may appreciate Danny’s right-or-wrong hard-headed defense of their province, on support for Dion and, by extension, his carbon tax-centred political platform, Danny is wrong.

Stephen, Why isn't Danny being investigated by Elections Canada for third party campaigning? Via Damian Penny, he is apparently polling on the issue.

Danny is nothing more than the reincarnation of Joey Smallwood. He is a vertically-challenged, small fish in a smaller pond who cannot accept anyone exercising political power in his jurisdiction without clearing it with him first. He holds his caucus with an iron fist (ouch) and has next to nothing as an opposition in the House of Assembly. The only thing missing is to remove any federal counter-weight to his all-consuming power.

How best to do this? By ensuring that politically powerless opposition MPs represent every riding in the province.

If he has his way, he will demand to know, “Who speaks for Newfoundland?” Only Danny-boy, of course.

“Danny Williams demands higher prices for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians”

The headline the CBC will use ??

    Probably not

Danny Williams is all about Danny Williams, while exhibiting about as much class as a one room school. The oldest shtick in the book for premiers is to position themselves as defenders of the provincial faith against big, bad Ottawa. But generally it is done with at least some semblance of credibility and substance. This guy is just plain obnoxious, unbelievably petty and utterly infantile.

HArper has shown himself to be a flipflopper (income trust debacle, no GST on gas, Elizabeth can't debate etc etc). Williams is trying to get Harper to do it again.

Good post Hugh. No one ever answers the question: “How will the Tory and NDP plan tax big emitters without costs being passed down to the consumer?”

  • AtlanticJim

Completely agree Stephen, but the word is spelled “fishermen”. Fisher is a creation of CBC.

  • Jackal

Good to see something being written up on this. Danny Williams is merely an annoying ass that makes his whole province look stupid to the rest of the country. Engaging in dialogue is what you should do in the case of a disagreement. Childish to throw tantrums in public places. I'd like to see the people not blindly follow his words but would not bet alot of money on the possibility. They're in love with him………..

The only problem with every other plan is that it promotes the myth that we can solve our problems with cheap energy. Dion’s plan is the only one that actually recognizes that reducing energy consumption is the long term term winning strategy. Carbon taxes have been successful in countries with colder climates than ours. Just imagine if fuel prices had been allowed to rise 20 years ago. GM and Ford would have become specialists in small energy efficient cars. We would have all retrofitted our homes, our power plants would run clean. The big disadvantage would be for Alberta where the tar sands project has driven the economy, polluted the water< (ask Saskatchewan), and destroyed the land.

Shifting tax burdens to consumption could be a very good thing.

“This guy is just plain obnoxious, unbelievably petty and utterly infantile”

Which is why the CBC loves him!

My prediction is that before the end of the campaign Dion will announce a deal that excludes the maritimes from the Carbon Tax. Then he will exclude Quebec and Ontario and those riding west of Ontario that vote Liberal. In other words he will only tax BC (oops he can't do that either) Alberta ans Sask.

That was all he ever intended to do anyway. Cheers.

Danny Boy is doing himself and his province irreparable damage. The damage to the province in relation to the rest of the country could wield damage to their tourism industry as well.
He's being a real vengeful jackass with no reason to be. If he thinks we in the rest of Canada sympathize with him while we pay equalization to his HAVE province, he's definitely way off base.

Harper is his superior and is proving so with his calm and cool handling of the situation. Harper has said the people of Newfoundland don't need anyone to tell them how to vote and the Harper Conservatives offer a much better option than the Dion Liberals to the people of Newfoundland. Surely the people will bypass one man's sore headed snit and do what's best for themselves and Canada.

Dippy Danny has lost this one.

  • larry

If Mr. Dion forms the next govt. you will see a recession in this country like never before. Wake up people the west has been pulling the load of this country for 15 years. The last Liberal Govt. allmost broke Sask. and Alberta we will not let that happen again. If Dion is gets in the economy stops. Do you think Ontario and Qubec will be better off. They are already in a recession more tax will sure help that. The only reason the country is not in one is because the west is doing so well. If China and India and the USA don't get on board it will not matter what we do.Canada contributes about 1% of the worlds pollution. So if you want to see our country become a third world country vote Liberal.

  • Truth serum

I'd love to see the good people of NL elect a few Conservatives, just to show the Dipstick Dictator Danny Boy, that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians will vote for whoever the hell they want, thank you very much.

Bob Fife said on CTV Newsworld this afternoon that there are reports that some suppliers to the Nfld government had been threatened with retalliation by the Nfld. government if they support any Conservartive candidate.
If true, that's a VERY serious allogation. Somebody had better investiagate. Maybe Elections Canada?

  • Stan

Danny and Dion have to have a secret deal to exempt Nfld from the carbon tax, nothing else makes sense.
I wonder what else Danny managed to pry out of the liberals?
Is a new and much bigger equalization deal in the works?
Dion needs Danny more than Danny needs Dion, so I suspect there is a pile of goodies at the end of that rainbow.

  • Truth serum

I hope the media has video cameras on His Highness, Lord Danny, when it is announced that the Conservatives have a majority government. When “anti-Harper obsessed” Danny the Dipstick hears that news, I think the top of the poor bugger's head might pop right off.

  • Truth serum

I sure hope the media has cameras on the “anti-Harper-obsessed” loud mouth Danny Millions on election night, when the media announces the Harper majority government. I think the top of the poor bugger’s head might pop right off!

  • Dave

Stephen Taylor, care to talk about the fuel surcharges that the Harper Tories have ALREADY put on Marine Atlantic rates?

    yeah, didn't think so.

  • Rastas

Today Robert Fife provided an amazing report about Danny William's 1930's-Chicago-style-mob-tactics against Stephen Harper. Will this make the evening news or the Toronto Star front page? Guess we'll see, but I'm not holding my breath. The link….delicious stuff.

Totally agree Stephen. As mentioned in the comments, Robert Fife reported that Danny's goon sqaud has been out after dark. Seems it's Danny's way or the highway for those that seem to feel PMSH is their choice. Not a good scenerio for the folks of the “rock”

  • Observant

Danny Williams may be preparing to build a firewall around NL should there be another Harper government … and then start a separatist movement to take NL out of Canada … after all they will have Billion$$$$ pouring into their government coffers once the oil and gas royalties start to roll in.

  • Reg

Sounds like politics as usual “down home”, petty and corrupt.

  • Eastern

Williams does what is best for Newfoundland, not Canada. If restoring NL to it's historical status outside of Canada is what he sees as best, that is the path he will follow. I've followed his statements and actions, and believe this is the track he is on. I think Williams feels that NL will never achieve anything while being governed from Canada, and 60 years of history shows this is likely the correct assumption.

  • JOE MURPHY

    Steven,
    Get your eyes checked.
I do believe that you are very short sighted.

I feel so sorry for Newfoundlanders who have to put up, through no fault of their own with Danny Williams ABC Plan. The big bully has it all wrong, ABC stands for Anything But Canadian.
His behavior has become identical to the Bloq. Offer nothing, do nothing and when the going gets rough blame everone but himself.
Hundreds of young Newfoundlanders fighting for our country in war. Frigates involved in the war with over one third of their seamen from Newfoundland. What does the spoiled dictator do? He orders the Canadian flag taken down. Like a kid taking a temper tantrum. This shows how much respect he has for others.
It is pathetic to think Newfoundlander's fall for his take the pill attitude. Supporting Jack Layton after he told everyone in Alberta that the oil sands should be shut down immediately. Imagine what the price of oil and gasoline would be than. Imagine our Country as tens of thousands become unemployed. Layton than goes to the Rock and never opens his mouth about shutting big oil down. This is what Danny Williams loves?
Am I the only one who remembers why Danny Williams son suffered such a terrible assault in downtown St. John's? Was that not a result of Mr. Williams making all kinds of promises to get elected and than once in power proceeding to break most of his pre-election promises? Did he not promise that there would be no layoffs?
What ABC needs is a mirror.
Citizens being told they will be sent to to other Provinces for cancer treatment. Hospitals in terrible condition. Yes indeed Danny Williams is “ANYTHING BUT CANADIAN”.

To be fair, I think Jack Layton has proposed a moratorium on NEW oilsands development. Meaning, existing projects would carry on.

  • Truth serum

Jack Layton and the ever goofy NDP thinks oil sands are bad. Our oil, in our sand, on our soil. Apparently Taliban Jack would prefer we be held hostage by the oil-rich middle east countries for our oil. You know, those bastions of democracy like Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Iran.
Taliban Jack and the ever goofy NDP knows not of what he speaks. He is JUST a critic – that's all the NDP knows. When they go blustering about what they will do when Jack is Prime Minister – ROTFL! believe you me they haven't a CLUE, not a CLUE about the real world. Silver-spoon fed, caviar sucking, champagne swilling socialists, who've become addicted to living off the taxpayer. Let them go out and get a real job for awhile, and then get back to us.
