Garth Turner gets caught

CPAC is probably my favourite place to turn for election coverage on television. They do a top job and it is virtually impossible to determine a particular bias towards one ideology or another. The cable channel prides itself on being a straight shooter and when Garth Turner’s campaign seemed to pull a dirty trick on them as revealed by Steve Janke, Peter van Dusen made sure to try to set the record straight.

Garth Turner is of course the Conservative-turned-Independent-turned-Green teaser-turned-Liberal that is never more than a few steps away from controversy. Here is the exchange from CPAC.

First, anchor Peter van Dusen interviews CPAC reporter Martin Stringer on being deceived by Turner’s campaign. Then, so that Garth can explain his actions, van Dusen catches the Liberal MP on the phone while he’s doorknocking and an awkward Turner tries to find excuses.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Garth has been caught playing outside of the truth. Flashback to my exposing of Turner fibbing about violating caucus confidentiality and the reason why he’s now trying to push a carbon tax for Stephane Dion.

I agree that CPAC does an excellent job of covering the elections, as well as the political scene in general.

I doubt CPAC would participate in some pre-arranged interview of a “Joe Citizen” who turns out to be actually connected to the incumbent.

Sad that anyone would resort to that kind of ruse to make himself look good.

Excellent! I like CPAC too, they do seem to treat all parties fairly. Garth was caught with his pants down, and should have admitted it right out. Instead he is blaming it on his campaign manager, leaving her out to dry. He's a weasel, and the best thing the Conservatives could have done was kick him out. Too bad the Liberals aren't that smart.

  • John Gatti

Wow! Great work to all involved. Could you hear Garth's voice shake with nerves? Caught red handed!
Couldn't happen to a better person. Garth calls our PM a whore. What a despicable human being a bald faced liar.
    Resign your candidacy Turner!

  • sdc

It looks good on that weasel.

    “Peter…dont do this.”

I loved it. Garth and Esther finally getting theirs. They have been dishing it out, drive by smears on innocent people for months and months. Calling people “whores” and lying to people about the facts…seeing/hearing this makes me feel vindicated.

He got caught and then threw his campaign manager (and biggest loyalist) under the bus. No loyalty shown by Garth to the woman who got him elected in 2006 and dedicated her entire remaining political life to him. GONE. Before it was Esther the great…now its just “my campaign manager…you go talk to her, IM busy knocking on a door ”

He brags on his blog about meeting people in areas of Milton. I know a lot of those people he met that day and hes BS'ing once again. If he reached 113 people in that area THAT day and only one person identified themselves as “conservative” he must have been talking to the same liberal 113 times. You cant believe a word he says and you cant trust him now…especially the people who are putting their heart and soul in to HIS re election.

Under the bus ye go…. KLUNK KLUNK

WOW!!! Exposed!!! Oh man, I was squirming just listening to this! He is finished! I can't believe the media is not getting this info out!!!

Thanks to everyone involved in exposing this!!!!

  • tory

Totally caught with his pants down. I love how he twists in the wind. There is no way that he would have not known, who's house that was. Who knows? He might have been there for umpteen BBQ's over the summer. What a weasel!! Buh BYE! Garth!

  • http://loreweaver.btblogs.ca Lore_Weaver

Wow, does Garth ever come off slimey here. He's also a bad lier, “I just knocked on the door.”

Wow, he's quick to stab Esther in the back. “Not recollecting things properly.”

Rofl, and he ends with a bit of ass kissing.

Esther, “We would never do anything disingenuous.”. Well, Esther, and Garth, you did.

  • Pat

Susan Ormisten covered it on The National tonight. With any luck it will be everywhere tomorrow.

  • John G

I've sent this story everywhere in the media. This guy deserves to get his once and for all. Imagine this clown calling Mr Harper childish idiotic names. Please give this as much legs as possible Stephen. I now believe in Karma!

  • http://torydrroy.blogsot.com Roy Eappen

Garth and esther have been caught. Thank you Stephen for exposing this blowhard. Thank goodness the Tories had the good sense to get rid of this person.
    I feel sorry for Esther.

  • John G

This is the story of the election. How desperate and far Turner would go to keep his seat. Pass it on to everyone in the media.

  • james

Good for CPAC. Garth probably assumed that they would not do a follow up, knowing that the MSM isn't reporting a lot of embarrasing things that have happened to the Liberals thus far.

I never saw the story run on CTV – Turner's former employer. Just goes to show what happens when you get media and politicians sharing a cozy relationship of sorts. This is most certainly a story worth reporting for ALL the main broadcasters. This isn't a first time, unknown Liberal candidate. It's GARTH! The man who everybody knows by his first name.

We'll see which media outlets run this story and which don't in the morning.

And hopefully, after Oct 14, we'll hear the last from Turner – this attention-seeker has jumped the shark too many times to be relevant anymore.

  • bob

Don't feel sorry for her. She's in it up to her eyeballs and has been all along.

  • bob

That's the problem. Nobody wants to run for the Liberanos… and how can you blame them?

Garth has ALWAYS been a sleezeball. Harper identified it early and decided to use it to his advantage. A trojan horse that the Libs never saw coming. And as predictably as the sun rising, the ticking time bomb that is garth went off and punched yet another hole in the hull of the good ship Liberal.

  • http://www.stephentaylor.ca stephentaylor

Please don't resort to ad hominem here.

  • tory

Disingenuous??? Of course it was!! Esther knew exactly where she was sending them. Garth knew exactly where he was going!

From the eyes of the campaign, this was the most safe venue for what CPAC was trying to do. Only problem is that they got caught in their disingenuous plot. Garth is throwing Esther under the bus, but in reality he is the slime ball for going along with it. Garth could have easily piped up and said, “Lets go to the next house”. She was just doing her job and will pay the price. As someone who works in Halton. I honestly hope this idiot doesn't get elected again. BTW Garth, the little show with Stepane Dion is about as lame as it gets. Reading off pages on a stool??? Get real!! Tweedle Dee and Tweedle DUMBER!!

  • mecheng

    Well done CPAC!

I appreciate VERY MUCH that CPAC takes there integrity seriously. How many times have we seen articles and newscasts by other outlets where we find out later that the “person in the crowd” they talked to had close ties to the party being discussed.

I have been keeping CPAC on the entire election, and probably won't turn it off. Good to see some organizations take journalism seriously.

  • Barb

Kudos to you Steve Janke. I think finally that Turner will not be elected.
Now could you please take on Ralphie Goodale.

  • James

Holy moly, Peter van Dusen just beat the crap out of Turner. It's nice to see a media outlet that cares this much about their own journalistic integrity. Thanks Stephen for bringing this to light for me, and thanks to Peter for being such a principled man. Respect +

  • Niagara resident

Kudos to CPAC for its integrity. And I must say I’ve never sensed a bias from CPAC. And as an ordinary voter I always turn to CPAC for some length of time or another for election coverage.

Let’s face it.. Garth has become a sleazeball. For him anything goes, rewriting his past so he looks good, trying to pass off this sham as an example of his honesty, and then lying through his teeth to try to get out of it. I don’t care what party you belong too, but this guy has to go. Surely the liberals can nminate someone who has a modicum of integrity.

  • Bob H

Garth Turner is what they call a “rat-f*bomb-er. Also a liar!

  • Honey Pot

Garth wants us to believe he had never heard of or met his campaign manager’s son before the staged event? Excellent investigative work by Stephen Janke, and cpac has gained my respect tenfold by ensuring the truth of this matter has brought to the forefront.

  • http://streetadvisorconsulting.blogspot.com markalanwhittle

Awesome expose on Garth Turner's prevaricating. If I was a Halton resident I would be quite put off. Once again you have scored a bullseye on another lying Liberal. No doubt Garth will be blown away at the ballot box.

If Dion was half the leader he claims to be he should kick Garth Turner out of the Party. I hope this issue comes up during the Leaders debate.

  • Anonymous

I guess Turner should have stayed a tory after all. He still acts like one…..but he will win the riding as a liberal and that really grates on the cons.

  • HaltonResident

Great blog and post. This is very revealing, clearly exposing Turner's duplicity. I believe Canadians are smart. They get it, thanks to work like yours.

Hmmm…. For a moment there I thought I may of stumbled upon my “true calling” but as I looked a little further into the Core Strategies site I discovered it may not where I wanna be after all given they claim to find influence in this man.

    http://www.corestrategies.ca/Garth%20Turner.htm

Sure, he can come off to some as a talented writer but the man is a total con.
And very lousy and hot tempered in the house of commons.

    That being said…

Looks like I'm still stuck a drift with all my genius ideas all to myself on over net.

    *siiiiigh*/*yawn*

Off to go crawl into a bottle for some sleep. Give it a good whack when you all feel your ready for me to save the world a little. In the meantime read my poorly typed out comments and ramblings through my profile… I don't know, google me or something. “Taylor Cutforth”, yeah you heard me with the quotes….. though that Clever Possums bit, ain't me… and apparently someone else by my name has a face book too? I don't recall signing up.

Bah! I'm off to bed. I'll just have to stop the supposed end of the world at a later date.

SO GOOD RIDDANCE REALITY!… until a little past 1:30 this after noon.

    *sigh*yawn*sigh*yawn*sigh* and so forth.

Nd you think a politician staging items and stretching the truth is a big deal…have you heard stephen harper lately. he opens his mouth and he lies…they all lie, because it works and bloggers do there best to make those lies to the truth…

Hey Stephen, I hate to keep bugging you about this, but can you add my new blog to the blogroll and aggregator? Details in last night’s email, full with explanation. Thanks, man…sorry to keep asking…

Wow – this is pretty low on all their parts. Having worked with their campaign manager on a previous Conservative candidate's bid for election and seeing how she and Garth so quickly jumped ship to the 'RED' side- I have no doubt in my mind that this was a fully-known and sanctioned SET UP.

I believe there is no way on earth that Garth would not … Read Morehave known who it was who came to the door. I couldn't tell if that was his campaign manager's home or her son's own home but in any case, all parties would have known who it was.

The gall of those people to think that they could put such a travesty over on CPAC and the puiblic (ME) shows their lack of reality and their complete disregard for honest dealings inthis campaign.

I can only say that this sure looks to be the lowest of many low points in Garth's attempt to be “Ruler of Halton”.

Oh man – I love hearing Garth squirm.

No media outlet could ignore this exposed ruse. CPAC’s credibility was put on the line here by Mr. Garth, they have to assure the public they weren’t in on it. It’s bad enough to do something like this yourself but to drag others in on it, make fools of others is quite another story.

To say CPAC is unbiased or biased is not a factor here. They’ve been forced to defend their credibility by someone who was less than honest with them.

Garth has really stepped in it and he should be man enough to go down alone and not drag others with him. That would be to his credit. Indefensible is impossible to defend. It’s white flag time.

  • Raging Ranter

Um……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. I’m in the middle of door-knocking right now.

Why can’t politicians apologise? Is it that damaging to one’s career to do so?

  • Chris

Weaseling out of things is important to learn. It is what separates us from the animals — except for the weasel. – Homer Simpson.

I don't think Garth's going to weasel out of this one. He's been busted plain and simple. His weaselly, confrontational approach merely confirms that he knew exactly what was going on. There's a Homer Simpson quote for everything. In this case, there are two. Here's the second one:

“Marge, I never would have done it if I thought I would get caught”.

  • Casual observer

I could see them trying to pull this off with the liberal-loving MSM, but on CPAC? good to see phonies like Turner and Elizabeth May being outed for who they truly are.

  • sir john a.

This is a serious mistake by Garth Turner and the Liberals.

Not only are they now relying on orchestrated stunts to create false impressions, which is dishonest, this shows a fundamental lack of regard for the intelligence of Canadians and the media, which is shameful. Garth Turner, Stephane Dion’s communications expert and adviser, thought he could put one over on us.

    Well, he was caught.

In my opinion, Liberal desperation has been exposed with this stunt, as has Garth’s propensity to lie and manipulate for personal gain.

Garth Turner, who claims to stand for integrity in politics, is a hypocrite of the highest order.

It will be nice to see him defeated come Oct. 14.

I love the fact that your next post here points out Turner’s usual tactic of attacking those who point out his stretch of the truth. In fact, I’m surprised he didn’t delete the comment altogether, which is very common for him to do when he disagrees with one’s opinion.

    Dear Mr.Taylor,

Before I start right at this moment I do not support any party because i'm still watching this Election unfold.
In regards to CPAC I have reviewed the entire profile for Halton. Here is my Honest imput about the overview.
Perhaps Mr.Turner did something wrong with the interview. But so did Ms Raitt.CPAC filmed Main Street Yarn Shop in Milton that is owned by Mr.Keith Hesse's girlfriend Carolyn.Mr Hesse in on the board of Directors for the Halton P.C.riding Association.I urge you to search Keith Hesse on your Goggle or any other search engine.
Mr Hesse was also present during the CPAC filming in the store looking at a sweater on the rack.
I wanted to express my concerns of being honest and fair about all of the comments that have been posted on your blog. I Thank You for allowing me to expess my comments. Jayson

As I watched her segment in that shop your referring to, it was fairly obvious to me that she knew or knew of the guy or at least that he was a fellow conservative supporter. I got the impression they knew each other but not that they were trying too hard to hide it. I mean, it would of been awkward to go into a place like that for a coffee only to not be served for political reasons, but how often are people like that outside of Toronto? aheh.

I don't think she was trying to pull a fast one on us or anything, especially not to the same lengths as Garth.

I don't think you can compare the two. I think, I'll reserve the rest of my judgement for when the facts become more apparent. I'm certainly not gonna assume the worst of someone just because she MAY of made a similar mistake but on a much smaller magnitude.

For anyone who had watched the full segment, I would think the Conservative Candidate would still be the most appropriate out of the choices provided. I swear, the green candidate seemed like she wasn't entirely human or stuck in a weird new-agey trance of some sort. Yay for the environment and all but that lady was creepy.

I don't know, I'm just saying ms. Raitt is certainly the least likely to embarrass the population of her constituency, if at all. I also suspect she'll do a great job in the HOC. She just has the right sort of gusto.

Thats my thoughts on your options. I can't say that about all Conservative candidates out there, but I'm more than fairly sure that she is the right choice for that area. idk, you'll come to your own conclusions.
