Oh Canada! :(

The 2008 Summer Olympics are underway in China and besides the news of Michael Phelps, that of Canada being shut out of the medal count is growing. Six days into the games, Canada has yet to mount the podium in Beijing and shares this distinction with countries such as Somalia, Panama, and Iceland while countries such as Uzbekistan, Armenia and Togo are besting us at the games. To put it in a way that’s becoming popular to say, even Phelps has more medals than Canada.

So, what’s the problem here? Charles Adler has rejected three theories: Canada is cold, the government doesn’t care and we’re modest.

One of Stephen Harper’s five priorities during the 2006 election was restoring Canada’s image on the world stage. (UPDATE: not a Harper 5, but still emphasized by the CPC campaign) The more cynical realists would argue that the Olympics is merely a two-week love-in once every two years and that the games barely qualify for what Harper was referencing. Yet Canadians are hurting as they watch the games and we feel that our athletes should be doing better at this international showcase of athletic talent. A check of the COC media guide reveals that $20,000 is awarded per medal (even bronze) to Canadian athletes via the Athlete Excellence Fund. This is the first Olympics where athletes have been given bonuses from the Canadian Olympic Committee for winning medals.

Perhaps a larger question here is whether or not it is the role of government to incent our athletes to perform. Does this professionalize amateur sport by diluting the spirit of competition with monetary incentive? In Canada, companies such as VISA and Rona have provided sponsorships and salary assistance to athletes. Both companies are official sponsors to the Olympic games. If the private sector can bare $8.7 million a year for Sydney Crosby’s salary, can it bare $8.7 million in aggregate for the entire Olympic team? For the 330-plus team in Beijing, this amounts to about $26,000 per athlete.

Does this therefore reflect our real and market-based attitudes towards the Olympics or does the funding equation need to be reconfigured? If Canadian athletes are underfunded and if we assume that this translates directly into their performance, would Canadians cheer and reward a company that offered $100,000 per gold or provided grants to Canadian athletes? The problem, however, could lie in the management of sponsorship rights to the games. If companies want to advertise for the games, should a larger proportion of their money go towards the athletes?

So where does the problem lie? Like all Canadians, I’d love to see Canada take home some more gold. Canadian athletes are representing us to the world and they deserve our support. How can we give it to them?

In my view, funding needs to be more directed, with some kind of oversight. It’s great that Visa and Rona fund athletes, but do they co-ordinate their efforts ?

There was a story in today’s paper about a white-water Kayaker. He apparently used to get $75,000 per year in funding, although this was recently cut due to his age. The man is 41 and is competing in his 5th Olympics. That means for 20 years he has been considered, and funded, as an “elite” athlete. In 5 Olympics his best placing was 4th in 2004, although he did win a world gold medal in 1999.

I’m sure he’s a great guy, but seriously, it’s time to move on. Other examples, Susan Nattress in the rifle competition and a lady fencer, both in their 50s. There is a minimum age limit for Olympic qualification, and I think there should also be a maximum age limit. Even if some of these athletes meet the required performance levels, I think that the funding would be better directed to younger Canadians. While I am in no way advocating Robert Thibaux’s views, I think that at age 40 or 50 an athlete’s best years are behind him, and the most valuable contribution he can make is in coaching or some form of mentoring. It’s time to let younger Canadians step up and take their chances.

In the interests of full disclosure, I would point out that 40 is but a fond (and distant) memory for me.

I read that one Canadian Kayaker spent 80K of his own money to fund his own training. It takes money for world class coaches, equipment, training and travelling to compititions. Seen as the Canadian government does not feel it worthy to support Canadian athletes financially, then we should not be surprised by our medal count. Like most everything in life, we are getting exactly what we are paying for.

What do these athelets do with the money they get. 75,000/yr is a lot of money. Does he train 24/7, compete in world wide events, pay living expenses, and are they ever audited. We have sent 300 plus people to China, and how many are there for the experience, how many have any chance in many of the events. Maybe we should just stay out of many events and concentrate on those we could win at. The first thing that has to chance is the idea that kids can’t lose, therefore all competitive events have been removed from school. Next, kids can get hurt, and the legal profession should quit starting lawsuits when that happens. And most important, experts in various sporting fields, that live in a community, should be allowed into schools to help develope anyone with potential. But, teachers unions have made that impossible by insisting that only a teacher can be involved. I know of cases where a former greycup winner was not allowed to work with a fledging football team in a small town, and where a former olympic gold medalist on a german gymnastic team was not allowed to work in the schools. These men volunteered, had parental and community support but the school board said NO.

Check your five 2006 election priorities. Canada’s position on the world stage wasn’t one of them.

Sadly, I think that the overall problem boils down to two words: Nanny State.

The bar has been lowered across the board. Too many Canadian kids think that life is just a lark, that education, sports, cell phones, clothing, Grand Theft Auto, etc., etc. is ALL ABOUT ME. There is very little competitive spirit and excellence, doing one’s best, were long ago abandoned as achievable goals.

In Canada, we’ve made “equality” rather than excellence a goal. ‘Nothing wrong with equality before the law, but it should never equate to “sameness.” Kids today are embarrassed to do their best because, somehow, they reason–a la the Trudeaupian dispensation which began about 40 years ago–their doing better than someone else might hurt the other person’s feelings. Or worse, doing their best might be seen as uppity–or “too American.”

Canadian “niceness” (which, BTW, is a myth), the need to be liked, and our obsession with equality-as-sameness has crushed both the desire for excellence and the competitive spirit in too many Canadians. When the government will pay you for not working, where’s the incentive to work hard and excel at what you do?

Of course, many of our Olympic athletes are fine competitors, but I don’t see the “fire in the belly” or the fierce concentration and focus needed to win medals that I detect in athletes from winning countries.

Most of the Canadian athletes have come through Canada’s lacklustre, mediocre, and increasingly socialist public education system. It is not an environment that inspires one to do one’s best. Having fun and being liked is good enough.

The local talk radio host this morning said that Australia (population: 21 million) spends $200 million/year on its athletes, or $9.52 per citizen; Canada (population: 33 million) spends $24 million/year on its athletes, or 72 cents per citizen. That’s pathetic.

If we assume that half of Canadians pay income tax (eliminating children, the poor, and the elderly living on fixed-incomes), that gives us approximately 16 million taxpayers. If each of us kicked in just $2/month – basically one x-large coffee at Timmie’s – we’d have $384 million for our Olympic athletes. That sounds like an obscene amount to direct to athletics, until you do the math and realize how little it really works out to on a per-person basis. Heck, we’d only each have to kick in a loonie a month to match what Australia gives their athletes!

I, for one, would be more than willing to forgo one drive-thru coffee per month if it meant that I didn’t have to watch our Olympic team get its posterior kicked by Togo again…

Good point. Although, when you mention the possible $8.7 million in Olympic funding, you not only have to include the athletes, nut the many bureaucrats as well (i.e sport psychologists, administrators, fair play advocates, lawyers, mission staff, etc.). They would cost a fair chunk of that money you mention above.

“How can we give it to them?”

Well, we can start by allowing club teams to fundraise better through charity casinos and bingos like they did back in the 80s. If I remember correctly (and I may not), the province (in Ontario) took over gambling and promised to give club teams a portion of the revenue. Many sports clubs were making much more from their own charity casinos and bingos before then they were getting back in revenue from the governement after, which led to an increase in the cost of keeping your kid in sports, with the obvious result being the decline of the number of kids in sports and a noticeable decline in competitiveness of the club system from which our Olympic athletes are produced.

There’s a built-in excuse mechanism for our Canadian athletes in Beijing. One the members on the men’s swim team expressed outrage that anyone could criticize our team. He stated the “accomplishment” of several Canadian records having been broke. Then he added this, and I’m paraphrasing… “I don’t know what people expect us to do when it’s the Michael Phelps show.”

Um, Michael Phelps only races in one lane per race as far as I know. How is Phelps preventing anyone on our swim team from winning silver or bronze? Of course, the reporter never queried with that question.

It’s not an issue of funding, it’s certainly not an issue of our “colder” climate (many events can be trained for indoors), but it does have something to do with the mediocre way we see ourselves, at least in part. But the lion’s share of blame for our poor showing I think goes to Mike Harris.
