CH panel: Fall election?

Today I was on a panel with Mike Crawley, the President of the Ontario wing of the Liberal Party of Canada and with Wayne Marston, NDP MP from Hamilton East–Stoney Creek. We were chatting about a possible fall election and the dysfunction of the Ethics committee.

And you are the one who dresses respectably for television appearances.

I noted the Liberal still referring to “Global Warming” and using th stolen copyrighted name “Green Shift”.
Can we say he’s not up to speed or simply a stressed out from desperation?

When will they find out it’s not easy being Green and pay the price to Jennifer Wright? If they don’t soon get it sorted the Liberals will get to use the name well past an election. Not much speed or even teeth dealing with copyrights apparently so why bother? The whole thing could be sorted by reasonable people but Liberal arrogance prevents that.

I watched the segment and was very impressed with Sterphen’s well though out responses, especially near the end when the Liberal spokeman tried to stifle your final comments but the moderator saw this coming and gave you the final word.

And your recent video conferences with Preston Manning and Ontario PC Leader John Tory are the way of the future, even my lovely 85 year old mom Anne has cable TV and the Internet where politics has taken it’s rightful place in the marketplace of ideas and oppinions.

Too bad the show didn’t have blogging Liberal Jason Cherniak on the show as their Liberal pundit, instead of a head office flack from the party.

All in all, a job well done.

You’re the insider, and likely know much, much more than I do about what Mr. Harper’s expectations for this parliament were.

According to you, PM Harper would like to engineer his government’s fall.
Yet in his speeches, Mr. Harper has time and time again said that he wants to govern until the Oct. 2009 “expiration date” for this parliament.
If Mr. Harper had been trying to engineer his government’s defeat, why wouldn’t he have done so when some polls had the Conservatives at 40%+?
Pundits have been speculating about election calls since this government went past the six-month mark, and they’ve all been wrong.

So, I disagree with you that Mr. Harper has been trying to have his government brought down.
IMO, the longer Mr. Harper’s government survives, and the longer the list of legislation passed, the more Canadians will be able to judge who is more capable to lead the country. Mr. Harper will thus be judged on his and his party’s record rather than the “scary neo-con” persona depicted by his opponents.

P.S. does this new format allow for previewing one’s comment?

I think that the Prime Minister wouldn’t mind going to the polls this fall. Economic indicators are showing the we’re headed towards some shaky economic times and the worst hasn’t hit yet. Conservatives usually fare poorly as incumbents when the economy is in decline. Fall/winter is also a harder time to sell an environmental platform on climate change.

Of course, only one Stephen knows for sure.

as a Conservative viewing from the UK, I found the discussion very interesting.

I loved the bit at the end when Michael Crawley tried to defend the Liberal policy of abstention to prop up a government they oppose. Wayne Marston’s comment “you either stand or fall on your principles and this is something the Liberal Party has not done in this parliament” was priceless: and Crawley even asked him to repeat it ! Your reaction during this said it all.

The Liberals will have great difficulty in explaining this policy during an election; the NDP message will surely be “we are the only party that stood up to the goverment.” Harper, meanwhile will be laughing his head off. I
could see the Liberals getting serious squeezed by both the Tories and NDP at the next election.

Well done for highlighting the fiasco that is the ethics committee.

Notwithstanding level pegging in the polls at present, I think the Tories will win the next election, hopefully with a majority.

True enough, one Stephen knows for sure, and two Stephens know more than I do (no false modesty – just the facts).

But I'm still not convinced this fall will see an election. Take a look at this: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RT…

As for the economy, Liberals are probably praying that it should go into the dumpster so that THEY can step in and rescue it, along with saving the planet from environ-MENTAL doom.

Still, despite Craig Oliver's loving paean to Mr. Dion's fishing abilities on today's QP, the only worm Dion likely has handled is this one, firmly implanted in his ear: “Election yes! election no!”

The by-election results should be interesting. None of the ridings appears to be a cakewalk for any one party.

You lack that obfuscating bombastic political partisan attack mode, and you would fare badly in a prolonged interview … you're just too analytical and slow in your public deliver. Learn to lie fast ……!!!!
